Former Qualcomm chief sets up new 5G-focused company, XCOM

Former Qualcomm chief Paul Jacobs is still hoping to raise the money for a management buyout of the company his father co-founded, but in the likely event that the obstacles prove too high, he has an alternative plan – to create a new competitor to his old firm. Jacobs has founded a new company called XCOM, bringing together several former colleagues including Derek Aberle, who was Qualcomm’s president until the end of last year, and Matt Grob, the EVP of technology who left last month. Like Qualcomm, the new entity will be based in San Diego and will develop wireless chip technologies for licensed and unlicensed spectrum.
