Ericsson doubles its forecast for cellular IoT connections by 2023

Ericsson’s latest Mobility Index predicts that there will 29bn connected devices by 2022, of which some 18bn will be IoT devices. The Swedish network provider appears to have regained some confidence, more than doubling its forecast for cellular IoT connections compared to its previous Index, to 3.5bn by 2023. While 5G connections will hit one billion by 2023, according to the report, Ericsson is also including legacy landline phones in this forecast. This is because its definition of a connected device is a physical object that has an IP stack and can perform two-way communication, not necessarily a mobile one.
