ARM’s IoT strategy may cost it years of profits; Stream purchase is latest step

The Internet of Things (IoT) is central to future growth for processor IP giant ARM, and its parent, Japanese operator Softbank, is prepared to play the kind of long game that is often denied to companies in public ownership. ARM will be better positioned to take a strategic approach to the IoT as a privately held firm, said Rajeev Misra, CEO of Softbank’s $100bn Vision Fund, in a speech last week, because it will be allowed to be unprofitable for several years, in order to execute on ambitious IoT plans.
